The Dutch Supreme Court has ordered a retrial of Guus Kouwenhoven, the Dutch businessman who was convicted in 2006 for arms smuggling, and sentenced to an eight-year jail term.
He appealed and was released in 2008, but the public prosecutor’s office in its turn appealed the decision to set him free. This appeal has now been granted by the Supreme Court in The Hague.
Mr Kouwenhoven was accused of being the arms supplier of Charles Taylor’s regime in Liberia between 1999 and 2003. The country was involved in a bloody civil war at the time. According to the Public Prosecutor, Mr Kouwenhoven not only supplied arms but also recruited militia groups to fight on Charles Taylor’s side.
