More than 60,000 Dutch children can be classified as “social outcasts” who hardly participate in mainstream society, according to a study conducted by the Netherlands Institute for Social Research (SCP).
The study was conducted on children older than five years of age. These social outcasts don’t play a sport, rarely go on holiday or have friends their own age. Their birthday isn’t always celebrated and they generally live in an unsafe neighbourhood.
Children suffering from social isolation are most likely to come from disadvantaged backgrounds. The parents themselves are mostly marginal members of society, living in low-income households with barely enough money to make ends meet.
