Spain’s King Juan Carlos I Saturday checked into a hospital in Barcelona to undergo surgery to remove a growth on his lung, the royal palace said.

The nodule on the monarch’s right lung was detected on April 28 and doctors decided it was necessary to “extract and study” the growth, a palace statement said.

The 72-year-old king “is currently undergoing a surgical procedure,” said the statement from the palace’s chief doctor, Avelino Barros Caballero.

The surgical team will later report on the results of the procedure, it added.

The Spanish royal appeared in public Friday evening at a reception for visiting US Vice President Joe Biden and seemed to be in “perfect” health, palace spokeswoman Blanca Gisbert told.
